I understand that nasa does a lot of good for us...but articles like this are so one sided and this is what the public sees so often. eric, go out and put a good name to nasa. maybe write an editorial to time.

"why are we givin nasa so much money? the shuttle explodes and they havent even finished that space station they started 20 years ago. this is a waste of money!"
the fact of the matter is, space exploration is the single hardest endeavor undertaken by mankind. ever. period. weve been tackling manned space travel for about 50 years, a relatively short time in my opinion. yet, we have already sent men into earths orbit, landed them on the moon, and sent them to LIVE IN SPACE! hell yes this is expensive, who the hell thought building a giant cutting edge science facility IN SPACE would be cheap...or easy?
and the ISS WILL benefit science, and space exploration in general. the fact is, nasa has put alot of money into the ISS. they will not abandon it as a project. rather, much like the hubble telescope, they will continue to make improvements to it and it will be awesome. (much like the hubble telescope has revolutionized the way astrophysicts understand the universe...an aside, the hubble might be the best piece of man-made machinery ever).
im also sick of ppl raggin on the space shuttle, like its some sort of beat up volkswagen. the shuttle is probably the most complicated system on the planet. it as millions of parts...millions(the entire system used to lift the shuttle into orbit weighs 4.5 million pounds.) They all need to be manufactured flawlessly, as even the tiniest imperfection can cause disaster (see challenger and columbia). by the way, challenger was NOT the fault of bad engineering. rather politics drove the project manager to FORCE takeoff against warnings of the safety engineers. in fact the shuttles flight record, in my opinion, is impressive out of 115 launches only 2 have ended in tragedy. this is a 98.26% success rate.
