Harry Potter and the rise of Nazi Germany

For Slothy, Bones and anyone else who is interested...

Here is an article that covers a lot of the points I mentioned last night. This was written in 2005 but the 6th and 7th books are loaded with even more similarities. The one that really stuck out for me was the talk of the slogan over the gates of Grindewald's (sp?) prison camps for muggles ("For the greater good" Reminds me of concentration camps "Work will set you free") and they imprisoned him in a place called Nurmengard (sounds strangely like Nuremberg where nazi war criminals were tried). Just a little something to chew on.

Does my face scream "Tell me your life story"?

For the past few days I've been running errands to get things organized for the new place. I've been spending so much money its making me physically ill. I can feel my heart rate rising every time they swipe my credit card and every time I sign a receipt I get that sinking feeling in my stomach. Today, however, was too much. Three people at the various stores I went to today gave me way too much information about their lives.

1) Walgreens: Cashier asks me what the wierd sized batteries are for. I respond "my bike speedometer". He proceeds to tell me about his biking career over the past three years. Apparently he trains for century rides and is saving up for a new full carbon racing bike. Ok, this isn't that weird. The guy finds out you're into something he's passionate about, so he makes some small talk. I can live with that.

2) XSportFitness: I go into this gym to find out how much membership is, and I get the whole tour from one of the sales people. At the last stop I meet the gym owner, Tony. You all know exactly what Tony looks like, because he looks exactly like you would expect a gym owner named Tony to look like. He asks me where I'm working. I say Morris IL. He starts to tell me about how he and his wife used to compete down there. I ask (stupidly) what they competed in. Body building. He pulls out a wallet size photo of him and his wife in matching unitards flexing for the camera, and then starts to tell me that he knows a guy who owns Flex gym in Morris and how he's a pretty good guy. I finally escape with a free one week trial membership and an awkward fist pound from Tony. OK, this was strange, but once again, I asked the question. Tony's all right for a gym owner. Plus if I join the gym and we become good friends he can break peoples legs for me. At least this day can't get any weirder.

3) Fry's Electronics: Totally uneventful shopping experience. I go in, find the adapter I need for my computer, go to the check out. "Total is $15.34, credit or debit?" I say credit as I (stupidly) hand over my Purdue Alumni credit card. "Ohhhh you're a Purdue Alumnus eh? Yeah. My uncle went to Purdue. Great school. Yeah he just retired from Intel. He worked there for many years then one day his boss came to tell him he had gotten a promotion and a hefty pay raise. He was making a lot more than most of his coworkers. He used to live in New Jersey but since he retired he's moved down to Georgia to be close to his youngest son. He's got two kids of his own. Haven't had the chance to meet them yet though. He's doing all right for himself I hear. New job and all." I try to walk away after he hands me my bag, forcing a smile and an unenthusiastic "Yeah, small world", but no. "Wait, gotta sign this receipt" I scrawl out a K and an S and briskly leave the counter. I'm starting to think it's me. Do people normally open up this much to total strangers? Am I just a frigid asshole and this is how the rest of the world operates? What do they put in the water in Lisle IL?

As I sit here typing this post, memories of other awkward encounters float to the surface. Barbers with stacks of photographs telling me about the close friend who is dying of stomach cancer and has given him power of attorney over his assets. The hair stylist at master cuts who shared with me her first experience with LSD and psychic readings. The janitor in the ChE building who always told me about her slutty alcoholic sister and how she got them kicked out of bars every weekend. There seems to be a pattern.

I'm now officially working on my mean face...

Story Time

Who knew that camp was all about embarrassing the counselors any chance they get?...

So it's been an ongoing joke here that I never get mail. When i say never, I actually mean I've received one drawing and one letter from 2 campers in the 2 months I've been here. Anyways, I hinted to my parents I would love for them to send me a carepackage since I don't often have the luxury of going to a store to buy something. Imagine my surprise when the counselor next door came in yelling "Darsupial!!! (new nickname) YOU GOT A HUGE PACKAGE IN THE OFFICE!!" It was the best day of my life. So I go to pick up this enormous package only to find that the largest package was no bigger than a shoebox. Mine, however, was smaller. I took my tiny package that was sent in a large Nutri-Grain box to the cabin to see what was inside. Perhaps a small army of chololate? or some good reading material? at the very least, a kind letter?? NO. Did u already guess what was inside? thats right->47 Nutri-Grain bars!!! utterly disappointed is an understatement, especially since I don't really like them. once everyone heard about my awesome package, the staff was in an uproar of laughter. The real embarrassing part is yet to come... Two nights ago, the nighttime activity was counselor dress-up. Each cabin got to dress up their counselor as any super hero. My cabin this session isn't exactly the most creative group, but I was shocked at thier idea: Nutri-Grain Girl!!! That's right, they cut up the boxes and put them on my head, shoulders, and gave me wings. My super power: shooting poisonous nutri-grain juice at evildoers. Yea, I didn't win. I just walked away in shame. You can check out what i looked like online in the 2nd session photos...

so i heard sandblast was one for the books?! getting kicked out of a bar for your amazing dancing madge?? they obviously don't know what good dancing is made of...hahahahahaha...so wish i was there to see it.
and just to refresh your memories, i have from aug 1-6th completely off. you can stay at the camp for free and probably eat for free as well...basically there will be no one there but us = awesome!!!

so i need a yay or nay asap, cause if it's a no, i'll have to tell everyone what a loser i am that no one writes OR visits and try to find something to do for 6 days. hahahaha jk

i reeeeallly hope you can all make it!!! at least for a day or two:) oh and as a bonus, you can bring/drink all the booze you like! does it sound as fun to you as it does to me??

miss you all like crazy,
darc

What does my dream mean?

I took a long nap today and had a really weird dream. I was already in my new apartment, and I was sitting at my computer screen when I get an IM from my ex-girlfriend. Here's how the conversation went:

JulMHolf: Bet all this news is making you homesick :)
Schwartz12499: What are you talking about?
JulMHolf: Well you know, all the murders, the petrified man...
Schwartz12499: Wait, what?
JulMHolf: What, haven't you heard?
Schwartz12499: no, what's going on there
JulMHolf: Three little kids were murdered in the streets, and they found a petrified man (links to a MSNBC article about a petrified man that was found in the ravine behind the library of our town).
Schwartz12499: When did all this happen, I just moved in yesterday?

Then the phone rang and I woke up. I've been thinking about it for hours and I can't figure out where any of it came from. I woke up late today, packed some boxes, and watched a movie on the Disney channel about a 13 year old boy who starts going through puberty, only it's not normal puberty, it's puberty that turns him into a merman, and then I fell asleep. What does it all mean?

this weekend

anyone want to go and camp at the dunes on saturday night? we can drive up sat morning-ish and hang out on the beach, then set up camp and drink a bit. sound good?

As per the townhouse camping idea, I think we are gonna try to stay in the city for the weekend to maximize drunkenness and sleeping- in- ed-ness. Where is everybody staying? It looks like Eric and I are gonna be at Vasili's (darn close to fields). Also, what time do you guys want to leave tonight?

Additionally, we should have a barbecue at Kevin's new place ASAP.
