We're still alive

Hey everyone. Just letting you know we are on the face of the earth still. After 31 hours of traveling we made it from Liberia to Sevilla, Spain. We each had the equivalent of 1 light beer and are feeling the effects on our bodies as we walked back to the hostal...Kali will be in great drinking shape by New Years...ie she'll be waster-faced. I on the other hand am sorry to report that I will be spending the new year celebrating in Chicago with Kami. Keep on keeping on and always remember that we are all brothers and sister's in Christ.

a little epiphany...

hey folks, so last night i was talking with a friend when he said, "that group of people is just dull" in discussing some of the people i hang out with here. after further analysis, i realized how right he was. if all people give off a certain energy in a group of people, a room filled with this specific group of "friends" from home would have the kinetic energy of a shoe on the floor.

therefore, THANK YOU!! for being exciting, intelligent friends who bring something to the table everytime. cause if i didn't have friends like you guys, i wouldn't know how lame these people are. haha put that in your pocket.

p.s. i hope that everyone will know their blood type for our new years extravaganza...

Great Idea

After a long night of boozing with some ultimate people from chicago, among them Peter Crotty, and listening to some cover band play too many fallout boy covers (thus the text message Joe) I passed out hard. Then at around 6 AM I woke up instantly with one of those light bulb moments. We should open a bar called Wifflers. It would be just like a regular english or irish pub, except in the middle there would be a wiffle ball stadium. We could have leagues every night of the week and serve traditional pub food with cute names like the Home Run Burger, which you could get with "wiffle fries"...

And that's why you keep a notebook and a pen next to your bed

So, last I heard, the summer camping trip is a no-go. Is anyone free any weekend? Maybe Six Flags near Milwaukee or a tubing trip somewhere closer to everyone? A couple days? Can anyone do that?

Continuation of last post

After a small amount of research, I think it is actually attributed to climate change. It sounds like we are coming out of a la nina year and about to enter into an el nino year (which would cause midwest flooding). Since we aren't yet into the el nino phase, I vote climate change...which is kind of scary. Does this article make any more sense to Darcy or Kali than it does to me?

Link that failed in comment.

I tried to make this a comment with a link but I failed. Does anyone know how to do it? I looked up html tags and I'm pretty sure I coded it right, but the link ended up dead when it shouldn't have.

Greeting Cards

So I was at Jewel today getting some cards for my brother's birthday, father's day, and two graduation cards for my cousins. Here's what I discovered: Hallmark doesn't make any father's day cards that don't reference one of the following things...
1) Beer
2) Farts
3) Fixing things
4) Pooping
or that aren't so incredibly sensitive that I started to lactate a little. I had to settle for a card that says "For Father's day I bought you this card" [open card], "This is the inside of it"- disappointment number one. Then I went to look for graduation cards and stumbled upon a whole section of "Happy Preschool Graduation" cards. Some of them had clowns, balloons and cheery encouraging messages inside them. The whole time I kept picturing the card I would give my preschooler upon the momentous occasion of his preschool graduation: "Happy Preschool Graduation Son!" [open card], "Too bad you can't read this"

Happy Birthday

This Weekend

What is everyone thinking for this weekend? Were people considering going to Kevin's Friday night and then driving up to the wedding together? Joe and I would drive down to Chicago Friday night if everyone else was going to be there. Kevin, do you live north of the city?

Thoughts?

Next Weekend

Kevin and I were thinking about driving next weekend and this is what we propose for you guys to do so that we don't have to drive to Indy.

Darcy, can you pick Kevin up at work (he works right off of 80) on your way down to pick me up in Lafayette on Friday?

Kali, can you drive me back to Lafayette (I'm not asking as much as telling you that's how it's going to be.)

Petey, can you drop Kevin back off at his place of work on Sunday? This would require you to take 51/39 up to 90 but looking at a google map this time difference is merely 30 minutes and he offers to pay for your dinner.

Thanks guys, we appreciate it.

I sold my X-box today....

to some guy who responded to my craigslist ad. I met him in the Jewel parking lot. At first I felt kind of bummed that I wasn't getting as much money for it as I had hoped. Then I met the guy. He was the comic book store owner from the Simpsons. To a tee. At least 40. Ponytail with a mostly bald head, check. Front seat of his car stacked to the window with comic books in plastic protector sheets, check. Nerdy, elitist attitude, check. Sixty extra pounds around the waist, check. He paid me $60 in sweaty, crumpled fives and singles. Suddenly I was glad I had gotten rid of the x box...

Spider Fact

While learning about pheremones that spiders give off we learned about this awesome spider. It emits an ant pheremone and it holds it's 2 front legs up to look like ant antenna and it walks along with ants just so they think it belongs. And then it eats one every day! How stupid do ants have to be to think that a spider is one of their own?! idiots.

Life changing decision?

So I was in the city this weekend hanging out with my friend Bryan who just moved to Lincoln Park a while back and it was a total blast. The whole time he and his friends were bugging me to move to the city, but was mostly just rambling belligerent nonsense. Then this afternoon before I got on the train to come back to the burbs, he said that his lease is up in July (same as mine) and he has nobody to live with and would consider moving to the South Loop if I was interested. So now I have a dilemma. There are a couple people at work who live in the South Loop, but the commute is ~60 miles each way. They say it can be done in under an hour. So that's option 1: Move to the city, live with Bryan and possibly one other person thereby at least tripling the weekday fun factor, drive forever to get to work. Compare this with what I've been thinking about for the past month: Find a random roommate in the burbs, possibly move closer to work (I already commute 40 miles each way), embrace full fledged suburbanism, drive 1/2 way to forever to get to work. I can definitely afford the place I'm living in now, but it's too much room and it seems wasteful and too far from work for someplace I arbitrarily decided to live. If I move in with Bryan, I'll spend more on gas but I'll still end up saving $200-300/month over what I'm paying now. If I find a random roomie here, I'll save twice that plus not have to deal with the headache of driving so far. What do I do? The idea of a 120 mile round trip commute makes me shudder, but the thought of another year alone in the burbs may be even worse.

Mandy Story Solved

Red and Mandy have been hanging out a bunch lately so today when I was "studying" with Red I asked her if she really thought that Mandy's entire family had cancer. The answer is?!

Mandy's mom has rheumatoid arthritis but takes a cancer medication for it (which is pretty standard) so Mandy thinks it's easier to just say she has cancer.

Mandy's sister might actually have cysts on her ovaries that are not cancerous. Since ovarian cysts can be cancerous, cancer it is.

Mandy's uncle died of cancer.

So duh, everyone in Mandy's family has cancer

Crazier David

So I get home from SB '08 and all I want to do is sleep in my own bed instead of an air mattress. Now, I'm pretty much counting on the fact that I never lock the basement door cause I didn't have my keys with me - also my phone was completely dead. Of course, someone has locked the door while I was away for the week and I'm screwed because it's 3 in the morning. Thinking quick I realize that Eric and Kali were behind me by a few miles perhaps so if I could get to Eric's house before them then I might be able to secure a futon spot which isn't as good as my bed, but better than my car. Of course, they're already home and I assume that the door is locked. Next I try Heim and Jess's with no luck since they've been home for hours. I come back to my own place try all the doors again or to look for an outdoor electrical outlet in order to charge my phone and maybe call Eric... Again, no such luck on either account. I go to get my sleeping bag and am about to call it a night in the car when I think...no, I'll just go to McDonalds and sit there and charge my phone...at least it will be warm. As I pass by my house I see a light flick on...Someone must be home! David comes to the door confused as to why I'm pounding on it instead of just using the key that I should have been carrying.

At this point, I owe David at least some common courtesy points - he did just let me in at 3:30 in the morning and save me from a night in my car. He apparently has just gotten home from the bars and has loads of stories to tell me. All I could think about was the fact that it's 3:30, I've spent the last 16 hours in a car. I tried my best to pay attention and at this point all I could tell you was that he met a guy in the bar who was an asshole and he got shitty back and then felt bad about it because "if someone's an asshole, they can't help it. They are always going to be an asshole, so why should I be mean to him about it."

The point of all of this nonsense is that he thinks he is really good at understanding people, even the assholes in life. And he wants to be able to contribute to society by sharing his thoughts and ideas with the world. So if anyone is ever looking for a good read you can go ahead and point your browser to

My New/Temporary Job

I applied to an onlide ad for teacher's assistants at a private school in the Quad Cities. I thought, well that's a good way to find out if i want to teach while makin moolah. at the interview i found out it was for two classrooms-the infant (-1 year) and the 3-5 yr olds. i thought it'd be fun to work with babies (i know, i know...it doesnt have much to do with teaching, but they're damn cute and i had to take the opportunity). the interviewer assured me i can still try the older room at any time to see which i like best. so my first day was today (wednesday) working in the baby classroom and here's what i learned:

-babies are freakin cute-minus the constant stream of mucus
-multiple babies can cause a large amount of stress over an 8 hour period
-one baby can cry the entire day, and people around him will say, "oh, he always does that"
-teacher's aid is a glorified way of saying babysitter of 12 kids under 1(in this "classroom" at least)
-either blue eyes are becoming more dominant or high-income parents tend to have kids with blue eyes
-a baby can produce so much poop at one time that it goes up the back of its shirt while he's standing up
-although the babies are adorable, i realized i should be in the 3-5 yr old classroom when a 3 yr old told me that swiper swiped dora's backpack, and he yelled "swiper, no swiping!!"

Stupid David

A. I can't stand to see my picture there when I load this site and
B. David is an idiot.

Today when I went into David's room to say hello, he told me he was reading Tucker Max. I was like, okay, Tucker Max can be pretty funny. Then David told me that it's a great website to go to for relationship advice. I didn't hear anything he said after that...blah blah blah he's my idol. Is he kidding me?! Tucker Max should be the last place anyone goes for advice on women...no wonder he went to speed dating and just asked girls if they were "Naughty or Nice".

Super Pooper

I found a company that makes the odor free composting toilets that Darcy was talking about. The secret to the sweet aroma? It's a negative pressure tank. A fan blows air from your bathroom down the hatch and the composting chamber vents to the outside. Plus it's aerobic decomposition so you don't make as much H2S. Fancy! There's even a mechanism that closes a hatch over the poop chute when you're not sitting on the seat so you don't have to look at your dirty little secrets. Pretty interesting stuff. It looks like they sell them mostly to people who would otherwise have septic tanks though. At 370 Watts for the thermostatic heater and draft fan, I'm not sure the water it saves would be worth it. They also make one that has no heater and runs with a small exhaust fan on a car battery, but fewer BTU's means more P.U.'s
