This drug is almost exactly the same as Flonase (which just lost it's patent and is now being sold generic) except Veramyst uses a different salt in solution than Flonase did.
"Fluticasone furoate, a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid, has potent anti-inflammatory activity. The exact mechanism by which fluticasone furoate affects allergic rhinitis symptoms is not known. Corticosteroids have been shown to inhibit mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. They also inhibit production or secretion of cell mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines, and eicosanoids ."
All of the things that it has been shown to inhibit are things that the immune system makes to defend against allergens. The idea is that if you stop these things then you'll stop the allergy symptoms which has definitely been shown to do in the clinical trials.
The question becomes then how is shooting this in your nose causing it to stop this - that's what they're not sure of.
In summary, they always have a pretty good idea about what a drug will do or a drug company wouldn't spend the millions to bring it to market. It happens all the time.
